Cádiz welcomed from 26 - 29 July 2006 the Tall Ships' Races fleet at the end of the first Cruise in Company. The port of Cadiz is located close to the city, so that the fleet and crews could enjoy all that the city has to offer while only a stone's throw from the quays.
The Andalucian city of Cadiz at the southern most point of Spain, will offer a warm and sunny welcome to The Tall Ships' Races fleet at the end of the first Cruise in Company. The port of Cadiz is located close to the city, so that the fleet and crews can enjoy all that the city has to offer while only a stone's throw from the quays.
Improvements to the port in recent years have meant all the necessary facilities will be close at hand and a big programme of sports, games and nautical competitions is being planned. This will make full use of the Elcano Nautical Centre, where many sailing competitions have taken place, as well as the nearby seven kilometres of fine sandy beaches. Many of the Liaison Officers who were on hand to offer friendly help and guidance in 2000 will be ready and waiting to greet crews. Crew friends, many from the local Nautical High School and Faculty of Maritime Sciences, are honing their skills and languages ready for four days of fun and sport, while the Lady Mayor will once again take a personal interest in proceedings.
Founded 3,000 years ago by Phoenician sailors, the city grew in importance after the discovery of America to form one of the most important links between America and the rest of Europe. Cadiz is proud of its special relationship with the sea and its glorious past, but is looking forward to the future and the arrival of The Tall Ships' Races.
