The accommodation you have is an important aspect of your stay here in Cadiz as this will be your ‘home’ during the time you study with us. For this reason, while we have different accommodation options, these have in common a guarantee that your stay will be in lodging that is convenient, secure and comfortable.

In order to assure high standards, the school has drawn up a set of regulations that the student will be given. All our accommodation conforms to these stringent regulations so we can guarantee our pupils a stay in optimum conditions.

All types of lodging have been through a rigorous selection programme that controls the quality of the accommodation we offer. The majority of our flats are close to the school in the historical city centre and come equipped with all you need for a comfortable stay. Kitchens are fully equipped with washing-machine, oven, microwave and fridge; living rooms have a television; bedrooms contain desks and bathrooms come with shower or bath.

At Melkart we offer you the kind of service that we, if we were in your place, would be happy with.

Our types of accommodation

Flat shared with other students from the school

You can choose between individual room or double room.

Flats shared with other students from the school have been selected by our housing officer and are found within the historical old town, within easy walking distance of the school. All the shared flats have 2, 3 or 4 bedrooms and come with the following amenities:

  • Fully equipped kitchen, furnished with all the utensils and equipment necessary: fridge, washing-machine, microwave, hob and oven, cutlery, crockery and pots and pans
  • Iron and ironing-board
  • Television
  • One or two bathrooms
  • Living room with dining area
  • Bedrooms are cleaned before new students arrive
  • All communal areas are cleaned before new students arrive

The price of the accommodation also includes the cost of amenities such as gas and electricity.

You will be able to enter your flat from 3.00 pm on Sunday afternoon and will be required to leave before 12.00 noon on Saturday.

Something which sets us apart is that whenever you arrive there will be someone from the school waiting at the flat to welcome you and show you how everything works. This person will not only show you how to turn the gas on, but give you a set of keys, a map of the city centre and directions to the school.

You will only be able to choose a double room when two students or a couple sign up together.

Before a student arrives at one of our flats, the common areas (living-room, kitchen and bathroom) are cleaned as well as the student’s bedroom. Afterwards it is the responsibility of the students to keep their own rooms and common areas clean. When a new student arrives the flat will be cleaned again, thus assuring that living conditions are always optimum. If students do not want to keep the accommodation clean themselves, our secretary can arrange a cleaning service for a cost of 40 €.

The person responsible for the allocation and control of the accommodation students have access to, is available to help students or to receive suggestions in the school office.

Flat shared with Spaniards

The flats shared with Spaniards include the same amenities as those shared with other students, the only difference being that you share with native Spanish speakers. The flats have also been carefully selected by our representative and meet the same high standards as those shared with other students of the school.

Living with a Spanish family

The selection of suitable families is also rigorously controlled so that as well as the high quality of your accommodation, you will be able to immerse yourself in everyday Spanish life and understand the defining characteristics of Spanish families. This is a great way of progressing rapidly in Spanish; to practice what you have learnt in real social situations.

The families we choose are informed of the level of Spanish the student has. They are asked to use gestures or to point out objects they name when necessary and are conscious of the need for the student to feel comfortable and happy in their learning environment. The student will learn to understand the way of life and customs of Spanish families as well as developing linguistic skills.

The student should try to integrate him or herself in order to benefit fully from this experience.

The different options are Half board or Full board.

  • Half board - includes lodging, breakfast, dinner and laundry service.
  • Full board - includes lodging, breakfast, lunch, dinner and laundry service.

Breakfast is served between 8.00 and 8.45 am, Mondays to Fridays; breakfast is served later at weekends. Breakfast is a light meal in Spain and generally consists of coffee, toast, cereal and juice.

Lunch is served between 2.00 and 3.30 pm. This is the main meal of the day and can include soup, paella, local stew (with lentils, green beans, beans, potatoes etc.) or salad, fish, beef, chicken, vegetable and so on.

Dinner is usually served between 9.15 and 10.30 pm. This is a lighter meal than lunch and can be an omelette, fish or chicken with salad etc.

Students may join their host family from 3.00 pm Sunday and will leave by mid-day Saturday.

The person responsible for the placement of students is available to help students or to answer questions or receive suggestions in the school office.

In the Spanish family you also have the possibility to choose between individual room or double room. You will only be able to choose a double room when two students or a couple sign up together.

How do we choose our families?

Our representative visits all families who have expressed an interest in our programme. She visits the house or flat in order to make sure that it is right for our students in terms of cleanliness, that it is suitable furnished and that our students will have a reasonably sized bedroom which will include a study desk. We ascertain how many family members will also be living in the flat, whether they have experience of foreign students, how much time they will have available to spend with the student, if they are smokers and so on. Besides these questions, if the family meets our requirements, they will be given copies of the school regulations so that any questions they have can be settled.

It is made known to the family that the student will complete a questionnaire about their stay and that our representative will periodically check up on our students. What’s more our representative is always available to help both the families and our students or to answer any questions they may have. We also arrange regular meetings between the school and our host families that focus on an analysis of the relationship between families and students of different nationalities. These meetings aim to be helpful and productive: we may consider and inform families of other customs, diets etc and discuss issues such as the families diction.

To make the stay in the Spanish family as intensive as possible we guarantee that no other language students apart from you will reside in the family. This way we avoid language students talking to each other in a different language than Spanish.

Hotel, Hostel or other accommodation

The School will advice those students who require other types of accommodation (hotel, youth hostel or other accommodation). In Arrival and Flights you will find information about hotels and hostels in Cádiz.
